For Derrick Disney, creation starts with the simple act of making.

In Episode 08 of From The Shed, we follow Derrick’s sculpting process, where the focus is on the simple act of making. Working without theory or constraint, his wood sculptures evolve from instinct and the subconscious. Each piece becomes a reflection of the time and place in which it was created, allowing Derrick to work freely, without standards, expectations, or premeditated intention.

We capture Derrick working on his next sculpture both at home and in the backcountry hills above Rincon Beach during the annual Creators Gathering. His instinct-driven approach and openness to discovery are apparent in every movement, from the first cut to the final form. That same mindset carries into his surfboard shaping, where feel and flow guide decisions alongside design and performance.

Episode 08 is a quiet, 70s-tinged snapshot of creativity in motion. It’s about the process, the freedom to explore, and finding comfort in making without pressure. Derrick shows that letting the work lead, rather than following a strict plan, can produce results that are meaningful, unexpected, and fully alive.
